The take

DougCo's other state park, on the southwest edge of the metro at the foot of the foothills. 26 miles of trails, a 1,500-acre reservoir, hot air balloon launches on weekend mornings, and 197 campsites that book out months ahead. Better swimming than Cherry Creek, slightly less convenient.

Why it's here

Chatfield sits in the lower foothills where the Platte River drainage exits the mountains, which is why the views west toward the Hogback and Pikes Peak are noticeably better than at Cherry Creek. The park draws over a million visitors a year and shows it: 197 campsites across four campgrounds (most with electrical hookups, some with full water-sewer-electric), 26 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, a 69-acre off-leash dog area, a swim beach the locals consistently rate above Cherry Creek's, and a marina with rentals.

Fees are $10 per vehicle per day or $4 walk-in, with the same $80 annual pass that covers Cherry Creek and Castlewood Canyon. Camping rates run roughly $36 to $200 per site per night plus the $10 daily entrance fee. The fishing is the genuine draw: walleye, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, channel catfish, and yellow perch in the warm months, ice fishing in winter. The hot-air balloon launch site on the east shore is a small but real reason to come at sunrise on a calm summer weekend; you can watch a dozen balloons inflate from the parking lot.

The trade-offs vs. Cherry Creek: longer drive from Castle Rock (35 minutes vs. 25), and the camping books out months in advance through the CPW reservation system. Plan accordingly. For families with kids who want to actually swim in clean water, this is the call.

Know before you go

Go for
  • Camping if you can book months in advance through cpw.state.co.us
  • The swim beach (cleaner and less crowded than Cherry Creek)
  • Hot air balloon launches at sunrise on calm summer mornings
  • Spring walleye fishing along the dam wall
Timing

Park hours are 5am to 10pm. Camping reservations open 6 months in advance and summer weekends fill the first day they're available. Weekday mornings are the quiet window. Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak; expect crowded boat ramps and full lots after 10am on Saturdays.

Pro tip

If you're tent camping, ask for the Plum Creek loop (sites C1-C50). It has the best tree cover and the most distance from the boat ramp noise. The full-hookup RV sites in Riverbend are level and easy but feel like a parking lot.

Skip / heads up

The off-leash dog area is unfenced and runs along the river; if your dog doesn't reliably recall, keep a long line on. Showers in the campgrounds are coin-operated. Bring quarters or you'll be back at the park office buying a shower token mid-soap.
